With a rich musical legacy shaped by iconic venues, local artists and generations of live performance, Downtown Lincoln is leveraging music as a catalyst for community identity, economic growth and downtown vibrancy. This presentation explores Lincoln’s evolution from a grassroots music scene to the establishment of a dedicated music district in the 2018 Downtown Master Plan, highlighting the partnerships and investments that have brought the vision to life. Attendees will learn about key initiatives, including the creation of MBX (Music Box), a hub for rehearsal, recording, education and artist development; the branding of the Boehmer Street Music District in honor of music advocate Larry Boehmer; and innovative projects that integrate music into everyday downtown experiences through public infrastructure, artist spaces and placemaking. More than a story about creating a music district, Lincoln’s journey demonstrates how cultivating a music ecosystem can support artists, strengthen venues, animate public spaces and help shape the future of a city through culture.
